Criminal Defense From A Former Prosecutor

Van Nuys woman strikes police car, leads them on high-speed chase

A 23-year-old woman from Van Nuys was arrested and charged with felony assault on a peace officer among other charges in the early morning hours of June 22, 2017. Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) had begun pursuing the woman earlier that same morning after they noted the car she was driving allegedly had been reported as stolen.

A LAPD officer and his partner were driving around Van Nuys around 2:15 a.m., when they noticed a white Honda pass by them. The officers soon pulled behind the woman and attempted to stop the vehicle. Instead of stopping, though, the woman reportedly put her car in reverse.

As she allegedly struck the police vehicle behind her, she injured the officer riding in the passenger in the process. The woman then took off again. Soon thereafter, the woman's vehicle reportedly crashed into the curb at the intersection of Vanowen Street and Haskell Avenue.

Once she crashed the car, the woman allegedly popped out of the car's sunroof where she could be seen talking on her cellphone and puffing on a cigarette. She was also seen screaming at nearly a dozen officers that had begun gathering across the street. Officers quickly approached the car, extracted the woman from driver's side and placed her under arrest.

In addition to an assault on a police officer charge, the woman was also charged with felony reckless driving, fleeing police and taking a vehicle without permission of the owner. She's facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run with property damage charge as well.

The defendant entered a not guilty plea on all charges on June 26, 2017. She's next due to appear in court on July 12th. If convicted on the aforementioned charges, she could be forced to spend up to nine years in one of California's prisons.

Charges like fleeing from or assault on police are among the many criminal offenses that are taken very seriously by prosecutors. If you find yourself facing similar accusations, then it's important that you avoid further statements to police and instead speak with a Van Nuys criminal defense attorney right away.
