LAPD arrests man for theft of Frances McDormand’s Oscar

After the Super Bowl, the broadcast of the Oscars from Los Angeles is the biggest night in television, year after year. Many believe that the highlight of this year's broadcast was Frances McDormand’s impassioned acceptance speech.

The acclaimed star of “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was given the prized Academy Award early in the evening and then reportedly had it taken that night at the Governors Ball. Los Angeles police later arrested a man on suspicion of grand theft, accusing him of stealing McDormand’s Oscar.

According to news reports, the 47-year-old posted a video of himself on Facebook, holding the golden statue and proclaiming that it was his. During the video, he apparently said he won the award as "best producer" of music.

“Look at it, baby. My team got this tonight! This is mine!” he reportedly said. He added, "You know what, I can’t believe I got this.”

A newspaper article said the suspect had a ticket to the Governors Ball.

A New York Times reporter apparently spotted the suspect holding the statue and tweeted that police were looking for him. She mentioned as well that Wolfgang Puck's photographer had already retrieved the award from the man.

A representative for McDormand later released a statement: “After a brief time apart, Frances and her Oscar were happily reunited ...they celebrated their reunion with a double cheeseburger from In-N-Out.”

While the story has a happy ending, those who face similar theft charges know that they face the possibility of jail time if convicted, and deportation if they are not a U.S. citizen.
