3 interesting facts about crime in California

Crime in California is an interesting topic that is important to understand. There are crimes against people and property of varying degrees of severity. No matter what type of crime someone commits, he or she runs the risk of facing legal repercussions.

To understand criminal acts in our state on a deeper level, it is important to understand some statistics and trends. For example, did you know that California is the 15th state with the highest rate of violent crime? Here are a few more intriguing facts you should know about criminal activity in the Golden State:

1. Crimes rates differ drastically by area

Certain cities, counties and regions experience higher crime rates than others. In 2016, the lowest crime rates were in the following counties:

  • San Diego
  • Orange
  • Ventura
  • Alpine
  • Calaveras
  • Mariposa
  • Amador
  • Mono
  • Tuolumne

However, the highest rates of violent and property crime were in San Joaquin Valley. Another interesting fact is that the Los Angeles area had a robbery rate five and a half times higher than in the Sierras.

2. Violent crime is historically low

While the violent crime rate in California is higher than the national average, it is still relatively low considering the history of our state. The current levels are close to what they were in the late 1960s. From 1960 to 1980, California saw violence rise a whopping 276 percent. However, the rate declined in 1993 and has been low ever since. The most common violent crimes in the state are aggravated assaults and robberies.

3. Property crime is decreasing

The property crime rate fell 3.3 percent from 2015 to 2016, which is still above the historical low in 2014. Similarly to the violent crime rate, the property crime rate in California is higher than the national average. The most prevalent crimes against property are larceny, burglaries and auto thefts.

Interestingly enough, the overall crime rate in California is still at a historic low.
