Hotel staff find drug lab in boiler room

Staff for a Goleta, California location of a major hotel chain found a hallucinogenic drug lab in the boiler room of the premises according to authorities. Staff alerted the police when they notice suspicious chemicals. The fire department was sent in to make sure the drug lab was not flammable. Guests staying near the boiler room were moved to different rooms, but the hotel was not evacuated because officials saw no immediate threat.

Police detectives suspected that the boiler room was being used to manufacture dimethyltryptamine, commonly known as DMT. It's made from chemicals extracted from root bark using flammable solutions. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, this hallucinogen causes agitation, increased heart rate, and body and mind distortions. Police also warned that there is the danger of respiratory and digestive problems and even death from overdose.

Law enforcement believes that the person behind the drug lab was a maintenance worker at the hotel. The suspect was already in police custody when the lab was discovered after he was arrested for another drug crime. He had only recently been hired by the hotel chain three weeks prior. As of January, 2018, he remained in jail with a $100,000 bail.

Individuals accused of drug crimes have the right to representation from an attorney. Production, distribution, and even possession can result in stiff penalties, but it's the lawyer's job to make sure their client is treated fairly regardless of innocence or guilt. Evidence is crucial in these types of cases, so it's important for an attorney to ensure due process was followed at all times. Defendants in many of these cases decide to make a plea agreement, but going to trial may be the best option for some.
